Why developing health and wellbeing in the workplace is good for your business

Your employees are the most important people in your business. If they aren’t happy, healthy, empowered and valued they won’t be working to their best and your business won’t be as productive as it could be. That will affect your clients, your turnover, your profit and your potential growth.

In today’s fast moving and changing world there are challenges all around us on a personal and also a business basis. By having an enthusiastic, committed and loyal and resilient workforce that is able to change and adapt to the environment around you will be able to move forwards during the uncertain times ahead, confident that your business will survive the immediate challenges and grow in the future.

Can you afford not to?

Businesses can save money by having a Wellbeing Strategy integrated into their workforce and workplace

People go off sick or are absent for a variety of reasons. People don’t always get on well with those they work closely with. The four main reasons why people are either absent, sick or leave are:

1. Stress
2. Mental Ill Health
3. Physical Health problems
4. Musculoskeletal disorders

The cost of absenteeism and sickness is high and so are the costs to replace staff if they choose to leave. There are particular challenges for a business if experienced staff in particular go off sick or choose to resign. They are very difficult to replace and even if you successfully appoint a replacement there will be a time delay in them commencing work and getting up to speed.

A fully integrated Wellbeing Strategy will help to prevent and manage these issues so saving you money in the short and long term.

I can help you to develop such a strategy and implement it throughout your workforce and workplace.

What are some of the causes of sickness in the workplace?

Stress can be caused by:

  • Poor working relationships
  • Being overwhelmed by work
  • Poor management
  • A lack of job satisfaction

As well as other reasons

Mental Ill Health problems can have their roots in:

  • Physical health or disabilities
  • Poor relationships with family, friends or colleagues
  • Difficult family circumstances
  • Trauma of some kind
  • Poor resilience and coping skills

as well as other reasons

Some physical health problems can be caused by work activities:

  • Respiratory or breathing conditions such as asthma or COPD
  • Skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and some cancers caused by sun exposure
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries or Vibration damage caused by work equipment
  • Slips, trips and falls due to poor maintenance of inadequate risk management in the work environment
  • Musculoskeletal disorders due to poor manual handing practice or poor posture at workstations

as well as other reasons

Musculoskeletal problems are most likely to be caused by:

  • Lifting, carrying or pushing loads that are too heavy
  • Using the same repetitive movements
  • Frequent twisting or over-reaching
  • Remaining in the same static position at a desk or vehicle for long periods

as well as other reasons

All of these issues and conditions should be preventable by a Wellbeing Strategy, however, if an employee does develop an illness then measures are also needed to help support them through that challenge.
