What are some of the causes of sickness in the workplace?

Stress can be caused by:

  • Poor working relationships
  • Being overwhelmed by work
  • Poor management
  • A lack of job satisfaction

As well as other reasons

Mental Ill Health problems can have their roots in:

  • Physical health or disabilities
  • Poor relationships with family, friends or colleagues
  • Difficult family circumstances
  • Trauma of some kind
  • Poor resilience and coping skills

as well as other reasons

Some physical health problems can be caused by work activities:

  • Respiratory or breathing conditions such as asthma or COPD
  • Skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and some cancers caused by sun exposure
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries or Vibration damage caused by work equipment
  • Slips, trips and falls due to poor maintenance of inadequate risk management in the work environment
  • Musculoskeletal disorders due to poor manual handing practice or poor posture at workstations

Musculoskeletal problems are most likely to be caused by:

  • Lifting, carrying or pushing loads that are too heavy
  • Using the same repetitive movements
  • Frequent twisting or over-reaching
  • Remaining in the same static position at a desk or vehicle for long periods
